Quality used turf for school & facility budgets
Used turf can be a smart, budget-friendly way to surface cages, dugouts, training areas, and sidelines. The key is getting the right used turf for the job.

The basics
What is used turf?
Used turf is artificial turf that has already been in service somewhere else and is pulled up and made available for a second life. Instead of buying new rolls for every space, a program can put quality used turf in areas where it will perform well for the use.
It’s a practical option for schools and programs working with tight budgets, especially for secondary spaces like batting cages, hitting tunnels, dugouts, and training areas.
“All used turf is not the same.” That’s why sourcing matters. Our partner SS Turf specializes in quality used (and new) artificial turf, and focuses on finding the right used turf for each project.
In short
- Previously installed turf, sourced for reuse
- Budget-friendly compared with buying new for every area
- Matched to the space and how it’s used
- New turf available when it’s the better fit
Two styles
“Old style” and “new style” turf
SS Turf works with two general types of turf. Availability changes, so we’ll confirm what’s on hand for your project.
Sourcing
How used turf gets matched to your project
There’s no one-size-fits-all grade. In practical terms, sourcing used turf comes down to looking at the material honestly and matching it to the space.
Condition
How the blades or surface have held up, the condition of the backing, and whether it’s suited to another round of use in the area you have in mind.
Type
Old-style turf (with or without a pad) or new-style artificial grass with infill. Each suits different uses; a training hill and a dugout don’t need the same thing.
Fit to the space
Matching available material to your dimensions and layout, including cage lanes, dugout floors, sidelines, or odd-shaped areas, so the install comes together cleanly.
Fit to the use
How hard the space gets used, whether it’s indoor or outdoor, and what your players or visitors need from the surface.
Used vs. new
When used turf fits, and when new makes more sense
We’ll recommend what fits your project. Sometimes that’s used, sometimes new, sometimes a mix across different areas.
| Situation | Used turf | New turf |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | Good fit when budgets are tight and you need more covered area for the money. | Worth it when the budget allows and the project calls for it. |
| Type of space | Cages, hitting tunnels, dugouts, on-deck areas, training hills, practice areas, sidelines. | Spaces where you want a uniform, like-new look or a specific product. |
| Appearance | Functional surface; may not look brand new. | Consistent, fresh appearance, common for visible commercial landscaping. |
| Specific requirements | Works when the use is flexible and the right material is available. | Better when a project has specific product or spec requirements. |
| Availability | Depends on what’s available at the time; we’ll check. | We’ll confirm availability and lead time for your project. |
